Burning the Future: Coal in America

World Premiere Showing

Writer/director David Novack examines the explosive forces that have set in
motion a groundswell of conflict between the coal industry and residents of
West Virginia. Confronted by an emerging coal-based U.S. energy policy,
local activists watch the nation praise coal without regard to the
devastation caused by its extraction. Faced with toxic ground water, the
obliteration of 1.4 million acres of mountains, and a government that
appeases industry, our heroes demonstrate a strength of purpose and
character in their improbable fight to arouse the nation’s help in
protecting their mountains, saving their families and preserving their way
of life.

Sustainable organic agriculture can be scaled up from backyard gardens and greenmarket vendors to replace industrial farming. Find out how and why. Join us for an entertaining and empowering crash course in agriculture, history and ecological design solutions with permaculture teacher Andrew Faust.

Food prices are hitting new records, and world supplies of agricultural commodities are shrinking. As droughts and heat waves associated with global warming become more common, so does the risk of crop failures and famine. Industrial agriculture has been successful for decades, but at enormous costs in soil depletion and pollution. Totally dependent on energy-intensive machinery, fertilizers and irrigation, industrial agriculture will become increasingly expensive with higher energy costs. Corporations compel use of harmful genetically modified plants, while wiping out biodiversity and small farmers.

Sustainable agriculture methods offer another way: rebuilding soils with compost and mulch, conserving water through ecologically intelligent landscape design, and replacing monoculture by planting mutually beneficial crops together. With permaculture, we can create sustainable farming jobs and abundant harvests, while rebuilding ecosystems. More info here.
