Events: Wetlands Preserved
Mar 14th, 2008 by Jervey

I think it was New Years 1996 when a wide-eyed kid from rural Massachusetts made his first unsanctioned, unaccompanied trip down to NYC. He came for a Phish show at MSG (which he remains proud of), and wound up riding the wave after the show downtown to a little tucked away club in Tribeca. The club was the Wetlands Preserve, and it struck this kid (who would soon be enrolling in an Environmental Studies program at a little liberal arts college) as just about the coolest place he’d ever been. Environmental activism crossed up with heady rock shows! What better?
So you can imagine our delight when we caught word of a new documentary about this totally unanticipated and completely unique place. And it’ll be playing at the Cinema Village from tonight through next Thursday.
For anyone old enough to have surfaced from this “activist rock club” to watch the sun rise over downtown Manhattan, or to have spent some time and energy on any of their countless eco-action campaigns, this film should bring back some very fond memories. As much a story of a little rock club that could, we’re told it’s just as insightful a look at a nascent NYC environmental scene digging in its heels the against stubborn and intolerant forces of the time.
Don’t take our word for it. Wetlands Preserved garnered a nice review from the Times, and you can check out the trailer here.
