Sunset Eco-Cruises to Harbor Herons Islands

There’s more to wildlife in New York City than those rats in the subway. Each year, thousands of herons migrate to at least 11 tiny islands scattered throughout the New York harbor. More than 1,770 breeding pairs of wading birds (including great egrets, snowy egrets, glossy ibis, black-crowned night herons, and yellow-crowned night herons) return each year to nest on the islands. Tonight, grab Dad and take him on an original Father’s Day adventure as you watch the sunset on a 90-minute cruise to some of the herons’ islands. With an Audubon naturalist as your guide, learn the history and ecology of New York’s herons and escape the heat of the city at the same time.

Superbia! Most people currently live in the suburbs. Superbia! is a book of fun and practical ideas for transforming suburbs into vibrant, sustainable communities, using the authors? 31 steps that include creating a neighborhood newsletter to foster a sense of neighborhood identity and cooperation, regular community dinners, discussion groups, and babysitting coops, the removal of backyard fences to create park-like spaces for community play areas and gardens, retrofitting homes for energy efficiency, and installing community energy systems. A comprehensive resource listing puts all the tools needed at your fingertips.

Plan B 3.0. In this greatly revised edition, Brown outlines an ambitious plan that includes cutting carbon emissions 80 percent by 2020, achievable with existing technologies. ?We can stay with business as usual and watch our economy decline and our civilization unravel, or we can adopt Plan B and be the generation that mobilizes to save civilization. Our generation will make the decision, but it will affect life on earth for all generations to come.? The book is available for free online. You may also order copies at: http://www.earth-poli…

Cities Respond to Climate Change: The Challenge of Energy Efficiency

America’s cities are confronting growing populations, a changing climate and rising fuel prices. While political leaders debate the development of alternative energy sources, most experts agree energy efficiency is fundamental to the urban future. Can cities combat global warming and the high cost of power with less wasteful infrastructure and other strategies? What will it take for cities to become more efficient—and what reforms are beyond the powers of local government?
