Missed the press conference this morning, but this is definitely worth supporting.  Kudos to Gennaro for taking the important stand against hydrofracking (fracking!) in the NYC water supply:Councilmembers & Environmental Advocates

To Call Upon New Yorkers To Support

Ban on Gas Drilling in Drinking Water Supply

Asking Community Boards and Every New York City Resident to

Adopt City Council Resolution and Sign Online Petition to Governor

New York City Council Environmental Protection Committee Chair James Gennaro, other elected officials and environmental advocates will gather on the steps of City Hall to call upon New Yorkers in all five boroughs to support a ban on natural gas drilling in the City’s drinking water supply watershed. The speakers will call upon the City’s 59 community boards and residents in all five boroughs to adopt a City Council resolution and sign an online petition that will be announced.

A new law signed by Governor David Paterson allows the controversial and dangerous natural gas drilling process called “hydraulic fracturing” to take place within drinking water supply areas in upstate New York, including the million-acre watershed where over eight million New York City residents get their drinking water from.

Advocates argue that the process is not just environmentally dangerous, but fiscally unsustainable; for example, natural gas drilling in New York City’s drinking water supply would force the City to build a $20 BILLION filtration plant at taxpayers’ expense.

First thing you can do–sign the petition.
